Advocacy in the context of international arbitration presents unique challenges. This is because international arbitration often involves parties, arbitrators and lawyers from very different legal traditions.
Whatever the traditions involved, effective advocacy skills are essential for every lawyer acting as counsel in international arbitration. These skills benefit all involved in the arbitral process, including both the parties and the arbitral tribunal.
There are, however, limited opportunities for novice lawyers to develop these skills in practice. Existing training programs are generally designed for domestic court proceedings. As a result, there is a compelling need for high quality advocacy training specifically designed for international arbitration. FIAA has been established to meet this need.
